One thing I remember about Christmas from my childhood is peppermint ice cream. My papaw would always buy Mayfield’s peppermint stick ice cream as soon as he found it at the grocery store. I remember going to mamaw and papaw’s on Christmas eve and eating the peppermint stick ice cream for dessert. The past few years it has been harder to find and I was really starting to miss my peppermint stick ice cream on Christmas.
As I walked through the freezer section of Wal-Mart last week I spotted the yellow package of Mayfield’s Peppermint Stick ice cream and wanted so badly to buy it. I decided to hold back for two reasons; the first being that Lew and I would definitely polish the half gallon off way to quickly, the second being that I hoped my papaw would find some also and I would have it while we celebrate family Christmas this year.
My husband, Lew, also had a family tradition dealing with peppermint ice cream. Their tradition includes this…
Lew informed me that he almost followed the Schwan’s man the other day to buy some of this…
Last night after dinner I announced that I was going to have a tiny slice (it was more like a scoop) of pecan pie since Thanksgiving was coming to an end. Mama Jane (Lew’s mom) then said “When you finish your pie we should have some peppermint ice cream since Christmas is beginning”! I told her that was the greatest thing I had heard all day. So that is what we did…I had pie to end Thanksgiving and ice cream to bring in Christmas! It was dessert heaven!
I am not big on the artificial green color and I honestly didn’t look at the ingredients list because I didn’t want to ruin the moment. With that said, this was SO good! The perfect way to start our Christmas season!
